Unfortunately nothing on the net is very stable. Over the years I have used several different addresses. This page is an attempt to keep track of them.
This is probably just asking for spam, but most of these addresses have stopped working anyway, and I already get plenty from people trying to spam the comp.society.folklore newsgroup.
In the fall of 1991, I became a student at the University of Chicago and was given an account on what was then, I believe, called the APC Sun Cluster. My primary address was
but midway received (and still receives) mail for several other computers, so my news postings and mail messages sometimes had any of the following return addresses:
I also had accounts on some of the Computer Science department's machines:
Beginning in the summer of 1993 I had a part time job with the Journal of Chemical Physics, at which I had the following addresses:
Toward the end of my time as a student, the University of Chicago Student Computing Organization (UCSCO) set up a server on which students could keep personal web pages. Mine was
In the fall of 1995 I graduated and eventually got a job at U.S. Cyber in Madison, Wisconsin. My addresses there were:
I also had an account on some dialup ISP in Madison, but I can't even remember its domain name. (I'm pretty sure I was etaoin@ whatever it was.) I don't think I ever sent any mail or posted any news from there, anyway.
I retreated from Madison back to Chicago, where I briefly worked for Web Design Group. My address there was:
In early 1996 I then went back to the University of Chicago, this time as an employee. My work mail went to
while personal mail went to
My personal web page at this time was
I eventually became aware of the wisdom of having an address not connected to my place of employment and signed up for the following address, which I still use today:
and corresponding web presence
These actually point to
but please use the pobox addresses instead.
After leaving the University in mid-1999, I worked for a few months for Rootsweb.com. I don't think I ever sent any mail with a rootsweb.com return address.
I then moved to San Francisco, where I worked for several months for Kinecta Corp. My e-mail address there was
After leaving Kinecta I worked for Eazel in Mountain View, CA, where my address was
but they laid off practically everybody, including me, so that's no good now.
In mid-2001 I was hired by Danger, Inc. of Palo Alto, CA, where I have worked ever since, but I'm not going to give out my address there because I'd like to keep that one relatively spam-free. You can probably figure it out anyway.
If you actually want to get mail to me, I urge you to use the @pobox.com address, which I hope will remain valid for a long time.
