The Transit page
I got a CTA map from 1948 at the Midwest
Bookhunters Fall Book Fair.
I don't have the map itself actually scanned in legibly yet,
but the accompanying text is readable. (Be warned before
you follow the link -- this is entirely images, and they're
big.)
This is from after the State Street subway had been opened,
but before the Dearborn Street subway was complete.
The CTA had just taken over operating the El the year before,
so they hadn't really started cutting expenses yet (aside from
dropping ``ten little-used stations'' from the Lake Street El)
and several
now-long-gone branches and terminals were still intact and
operational.
This is some unsupported speculation
about what might have been planned for the CTA's train routes and the Loop
in the 1950s.
There will be more here, obviously, once I get more things
scanned in and written up.
